The Prayer the Machine Cannot Say

AI can write a beautiful prayer. It just can't pray one.

On the morning of December 8, 1944, General George Patton picked up the telephone and called his chief chaplain, Monsignor James O'Neill, with a question that was not really a question: "Do you have a good prayer for weather? We must do something about those rains if we are to win the war."

O'Neill looked out his window at the steady downpour that had plagued the Third Army for months, checked his prayer books, found nothing suitable, and typed an original on a three-by-five filing card:

"Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle."

He brought it to Patton. The General read it, handed it back, and said: "Have 250,000 copies printed and see to it that every man in the Third Army gets one." O'Neill added a Christmas greeting from Patton on the reverse side. The cards went out. Two weeks later, the weather broke. Patton awarded O'Neill a Bronze Star.

But what happened between printing and clearing skies is the part worth sitting with.

After handing off the prayer card, Patton asked O'Neill to sit down. "I want to talk to you about this business of prayer," he said. Then he asked a question that had nothing to do with the card: "How much praying is being done in the Third Army?"

O'Neill admitted the truth. Not much. The men prayed under fire, but in the waiting, in the rain, in the dangerous quiet, prayer dropped off. It felt too formal, too removed from the mud they were sitting in.

Patton's response, recorded in O'Neill's own account, was striking. He didn't talk about the prayer card. He talked about the men. "A good soldier is not made merely by making him think and work. There is something in every soldier that goes deeper than thinking or working. It is something that he has built in there: it is a world of truth and power that is higher than himself."

Patton understood something that matters for our conversation about AI and the devotional life. The prayer card was a tool. A good one. But the tool was not the praying. 250,000 cards distributed is logistics. 250,000 soldiers on their knees in the frozen Ardennes is something else entirely.

The Devotional Machine

Today, the prayer cards write themselves.

Ask any major AI model to compose a morning prayer, a meditation on Psalm 23, a devotional reflection on suffering, and it will produce something polished, theologically coherent, and, in some cases, genuinely moving. I know this because I've done it. I mentioned in the first essay of this series that I've been tempted to let AI generate my devotional reflections rather than doing the slow work of sitting with the text myself. That temptation hasn't gone away. If anything, the tools have gotten better at producing content that feels like it was wrestled from a real soul.

And here I want to be fair, because the easy take is that AI devotional content is bad, and I don't think that's quite right. AI can scaffold a devotional practice. It can suggest a reading plan. It can offer historical context on a passage, surface cross-references you might miss, or help someone who has never prayed find a starting point. For a person returning to faith after years away, an AI-generated prayer of confession might be the first honest words they've read in a decade. That's not nothing.

The problem comes when the scaffold replaces the building.

The Psalms Were Not Generated

The church's oldest prayer book is the Psalter. And the Psalms are, by any literary standard, uneven. Some are transcendent. Some are repetitive. Some are violent in ways that make modern readers flinch. Psalm 137 ends with a blessing on whoever dashes Babylonian infants against rocks. Psalm 88 is unrelenting darkness with no resolution, no dawn, no "but God." It just ends in the dark.

No AI trained on devotional best practices would produce Psalm 88. It would add a hopeful closing line, because that's what the training data rewards. It would smooth the rough edges, because rough edges score poorly.

But the Psalms were not written to score well. They were written by people in genuine distress, in exile, under siege, grieving, raging, terrified. The rawness is the point. When you pray Psalm 88 on a night when nothing is okay and you cannot find God anywhere, you discover that someone has been here before you. The prayer meets you in the dark precisely because it was forged in the dark. Not composed in comfort and styled to resemble distress. Actually forged there. By a real person. In a real night. With a real God who was silent.

That's what AI-generated devotional content can never replicate: the cost. The prayer that matters is the one that costs the person praying something.

Formation, Not Information

In last week's essay, I argued that creative acts form the creator. The painting changes the painter. The writing changes the writer. The output is a byproduct. The real product is the person who was transformed by the process.

Prayer works the same way.

Prayer is not information delivery to God. God does not need your status update. The Reformers were clear on this: prayer changes the one praying. Luther called prayer "the daily exercise of faith." Not a transaction. An exercise. The kind that builds something in you over time, the way running builds endurance and silence builds patience.

When I sit with a difficult text and bring my own confusion to it, something happens that I didn't plan. The passage reads me. My half-formed thoughts get caught on a phrase, and I realize I'm angry about something I hadn't named, or grateful for something I'd overlooked, or convicted about something I'd rationalized. The text becomes a mirror, but only if I'm the one standing in front of it.

AI-generated devotional content hands me someone else's reflection in a mirror. It might be a fine reflection. But it's not mine. And the formative power of prayer depends on it being mine: my words, my silence, my confusion, my showing up.

The Incarnation Argument

There's a deeper theological claim underneath all of this, and it's the one I keep coming back to.

God had options. An omnipotent God could have saved humanity by decree. He could have sent a message, a set of instructions, a cosmic memo explaining the terms of reconciliation. Instead, He showed up. "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." The Incarnation is God's refusal to save us from a distance.

Prayer is the human side of that same logic. It's how we show up before God. Not with polished words. Not with optimized content. With ourselves. The whole unedited mess of us.

You cannot outsource showing up. You can outsource the preparation. You can use a tool to get to the door. But walking through it is something only you can do, because the walking is the point. The walking is where the formation happens.

Patton's chaplain could write the prayer. The printing press could distribute it. But 250,000 cards sitting in 250,000 pockets are just paper. The prayer that broke the weather, if you believe prayer works at all, was the one a frozen soldier actually said, standing in the Ardennes, meaning it.

What I Actually Do

I still use AI in my devotional preparation. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. I use it to look up historical context, to check cross-references, to explore how a Hebrew word was used elsewhere in the Old Testament. I use it the way I'd use a concordance or a commentary: as a reference tool that gets me to the text faster.

What I try not to do, and what I'd encourage anyone reading this to resist, is let the tool do the praying for me. The moment I read an AI-generated reflection and nod along instead of wrestling with the passage myself, I've traded formation for consumption. I've become an audience to my own devotional life.

And God is not looking for an audience. He's looking for a partner in conversation. One who shows up, stumbles through it, and is changed by the encounter.

The prayer the machine cannot say is the one that costs you something. Yours will be less polished than what the algorithm produces. It will be uneven, like the Psalms. It might end in the dark, like Psalm 88.

Say it anyway.
