Psalm 27:1 · Joshua 1:9 · 2 Timothy 1:7

Day 12 of this daily devotional focuses on courage for today through Psalm 27:1, Joshua 1:9, and Second Timothy 1:7. Fear has a way of making everything seem bigger than it really is — that difficult conversation looms like a mountain, test results feel like they hold the power to destroy your peace. But what if fear is lying to you? David faced bears, lions, giants, and armies yet could ask 'Whom shall I fear?' not because he was naturally brave, but because he knew who was with him. God told Joshua to be strong and courageous multiple times precisely because Joshua was scared — about to lead millions into battles he'd never fought. And Paul reminds us that the Spirit within us gives power, love, and sound judgment. Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's taking the next right step despite fear. This morning devotional includes Bible reading, reflection, and prayer. From 3 Verses a Day, a daily Christian devotional podcast by Mark Ross Junkans.

Reflection

Fear has a way of making everything seem bigger than it really is. That difficult conversation you need to have looms like a mountain. The medical test results feel like they hold the power to destroy your peace. The financial pressure seems insurmountable. Fear whispers that you're not strong enough, smart enough, or equipped enough to handle what's ahead.

But what if fear is lying to you?

David faced bears, lions, giants, and armies, yet he could ask, "Whom shall I fear?" This wasn't because he was naturally brave—it was because he knew who was with him. When God is your light, darkness loses its power to blind you. When God is your salvation, enemies lose their power to destroy you. When God is your stronghold, storms lose their power to knock you down.

God told Joshua to be strong and courageous not once, but multiple times. Why? Because Joshua was scared! He was about to lead millions of people into battles he'd never fought in a land he'd never conquered. But God didn't say, "Don't be scared." He said, "Be courageous anyway, because I'll be with you wherever you go."

Paul reminds Timothy—and us—that the Spirit within us is not a spirit of timidity. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. You have access to divine power, supernatural love, and sound judgment. You're not facing your fears alone or with only human resources.

Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's taking the next right step despite fear. God doesn't promise you'll never feel afraid, but He does promise you'll never face anything alone.

Prayer

Lord, when fear tries to paralyze me, remind me that You are with me and that Your power is greater than whatever I'm facing.

Application

Identify one thing you've been avoiding because of fear, and take one small brave step toward it today.
