Daily Devotional — Day 13: Gratitude in All Things
Psalm 100:4 · 1 Chronicles 16:34 · 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Day 13 of this daily Bible reading explores gratitude in all things through Psalm 100:4, First Chronicles 16:34, and First Thessalonians 5:18. Here's a challenge: try to feel anxious and grateful at the same time — it's nearly impossible. Gratitude has an amazing ability to shift our perspective and change our emotional temperature. But when life gets hard, gratitude can feel forced. The key is understanding what Scripture means by giving thanks 'in all circumstances' — not for everything that happens, but finding things to be grateful for even in the midst of difficulty. David says gratitude is like a doorway into experiencing God's goodness more fully. Paul's instruction comes from someone who'd been beaten, imprisoned, and shipwrecked — he discovered that gratitude transforms how we experience any circumstances. This 5-minute devotional includes Scripture, reflection, and prayer. From 3 Verses a Day, a daily Christian devotional podcast by Mark Ross Junkans.

Reflection
Here's a challenge: try to feel anxious and grateful at the same time. It's nearly impossible. Gratitude has this amazing ability to shift our perspective and change our emotional temperature. But let's be honest—when life gets hard, gratitude can feel forced or even offensive. How can you give thanks when you're hurting, disappointed, or overwhelmed?
The key is understanding what the Bible means by giving thanks "in all circumstances." It's not giving thanks for everything that happens—some things are genuinely bad and don't deserve our gratitude. Instead, it's finding things to be grateful for even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
David talks about entering God's presence with thanksgiving. This suggests that gratitude is like a doorway into experiencing God's goodness more fully. When we focus on what we're thankful for, we become more aware of God's presence and provision in our lives.
The chronicler reminds us that God's love endures forever—that's always something we can be grateful for, regardless of our current situation. Even when everything else feels uncertain, God's love for you remains constant and unchanging.
Paul's instruction to "give thanks in all circumstances" comes from someone who had been beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and rejected. He wasn't writing from a comfortable position; he was writing from experience. He discovered that gratitude isn't dependent on ideal circumstances—it's a choice that transforms how we experience any circumstances.
Start small. Maybe you can't be thankful for your current trial, but you can be thankful that you don't have to face it alone. Maybe you can't be grateful for the diagnosis, but you can be grateful for the people who care about you through it.
Prayer
